By: Isla Morley
Yet another gem in the crown of the popular post apocalyptic genre of novels, Above by Isla Morley is frighteningly vivid and eerily well written. Morley’s writing draws you down underground and into the shoes of Blythe – a young captive, strong and determined to survive in the cold grip of her survivalist captor. Learning to cope with utter loneliness and staving off the despair that both surrounds and permeates her life, Blythe will teach you many things about yourself. It will provoke you to think about what you would have done or been able to cope with. Morley has crafted an amazing novel, with starts and stops, sprints and legs of a marathon. Her evocative writing style and main character are a thing of beauty. Above is filled with twists and turns making it impossible to guess what is coming next. The unpredictability makes this story both captivating and frightening.
Above by Isla Morley is a great read that will have you turning page after page at an alarming rate. Be warned. This is not a book that you read casually, picking it up and putting it down, taking it in small doses. You will find yourself grabbing for the book in your every spare moment. The skill with which this work is written and that Isla Morley exudes elevate themselves to a rank befitting the elite of this genre. Above holds its own in a class with popular successes like The Hunger Games and The Office of Mercy, joining ranks with expertly crafted works that will have your heart pounding and your mind racing. I recommend this book with gusto to anyone who enjoys a good post apocalyptic work or is looking for a great fictional story to sink their teeth into. Above progresses quickly, building one event on top of another, gathering steam and complexity. The novel is easy to devour and makes for a quick read – perfect for a long, relaxing weekend or vacation. I am anxiously awaiting Isla Morley’s next imaginative work.
