Holding a brand new Patricia Cornwell novel in my hands reminds me of that feeling you have as a kid holding a Christmas present – all of the excitement over the prospect of what this wonder might hold. That’s because Cornwell’s novels are thrilling, jaunts into scintillating crimes with a fierce heroine poised to bring them to close. I’ve had the pleasure of reading the latest Cornwell novel, Chaos and now I’ve got that satiated bliss that comes from playing with a wonderful new toy. Chaos, the latest installment of Cornwell’s Scarpetta Series is an intense thriller where Dr. Kay Scarpetta has a bad feeling that somehow the people whom she loves are in danger. A dark figure from her past is lurking in the shadows, and with no other way of determining what or how danger might befall them, Kay Scarpetta throws herself into solving the case before her, hoping that the evidence will reveal the real threat.
Patricia Cornwell has created our generations Agatha Christie in the lead character of Doctor Kay Scarpetta. Her knowledge of the human body, pathology, criminal evidence and crimes that go beyond the blond ripped from the headlines stuff, paired with er natural inclination to think outside of the box and her refusal to backdown create a force to be reckoned with. As Chief Medical Examiner for the city of Boston and married to a successful FBI counter terrorist specialist, Cornwell has perfectly positioned Scarpetta to be at the heart of intense cases. Chaos, as is the case with all of her novels, is downright thrilling.
