Hive and Heist
By: Janine A. Southard
Do you enjoy being swept away by a book? Far, far away? How about being swept away to outer space, across galaxies to a completely new world? Yea? Well, then you need to check out the Hive and Queen saga by Janine A Southard. I just finished book two and I have to say that it was an interesting read with complex plot making this book one that you can get lost in. Complicated new roles and interpersonal relationships give way to new internal and external conflicts when humans adopt the hive system for themselves. The detailed and vivid descriptions of this new and intergalactic space station are amazing, along with the technology that Southard’s imagination has birthed. There is a little bit in both Hive and Heist and the Hive and Queen series for everyone. A hive, or individuals pledge their devotion to a queen. In this case the hive is a young and brazen one dedicated to a beautiful and intelligent young queen. They travel far and wide in search of a new start and to find their place in this large expanse, but will it pay off?
I have to confess that I missed this series when it was first published. I’m not normally one for novels about space, but with the post apocalyptic kick that I’ve been on lately, combined with the description and early reviews on this one I decided to give it a try. After reading Hive and Heist I can say that I’m glad that I caught it on the second book. It was a fun read. When I first started I was a bit worried that I might be lost – having missed the first book. I was pleased however to find that there were enough contextual clues to aid new readers while not boring those who read the first book in the series. If you like space, crime dramas, fiction, futuristic fiction, sci-fi, or anthropology this is a good book and series for you to check out.
