A Pattern of Lies
By: Charles Todd
An exquisite mystery that transports readers back into the very bloodiest phases of World War I, A Pattern of Lies delights readers of all predilections. Charles Todd has created yet another masterpiece, in this his latest Bess Crawford mystery. From the very first pages of the book, the characters draw the reader in, through space and time. You are transported between the military hospitals and trenches of France and what should be the safety of England’s shores. The shockwaves of a two year old gun powder mill explosion still reverberate through the sleepy countryside and endanger the welfare of the mill’s former owner, and his family. Bess Crawford, a nurse during the war, and daughter of a famous war hero herself, will stop at nothing to see her friend’s father’s name cleared and the dust settle along the banks of the Cran once and for all. Charles Todd creates mysteries that much to our delight, are not easily solvable. He is the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of the modern day, creating rich stories full of complex details and entertaining readers both here and across the pond.
It is quite obvious that I thoroughly enjoyed reaching A Pattern of Lies. What is not so obvious is the creativity Todd is capable within the framework of history. He has a very rare skill of finding a very small hole in the tapestry of history, and weaving together gossamer threads until he has left behind a very enjoyable tale. Is my praise over the top? It may be, but in my humble opinion, an author of this caliber deserves every word of it. History, beautiful scenery, an extremely unique mystery centered around a very intriguing cast of characters. From the admirably brave and selfless Bess Crawford, to the beaus vying for her attention, to the sinister actions of of a mysterious criminal, all of those involved in A Pattern of Lies make this a book fit for your shelves. Fans of history, of empowered female leads, of mysteries, and of exquisite story telling will all love the latest work from Charles Todd.
