America the Beautiful
By: Benjamin Carson
A learned friend of mine, Julian Craig (who is currently pursing his Doctorate in Clinical Counseling and plans to open his own practice) leant me Dr. Benjamin Carson’s book America the Beautiful. This book is a wonderful blend of American history, current affairs, personal anecdotes and other stories. Democrat or Republican will learn something from this work alike. Dr. Carson does not align himself with any party and therefore shows no outright love or dislike. Rather he presents logical solutions to many of the challenges and problems that we as modern Americans face. Healthcare, immigration, and education are just a few of the topics that Carson lends his expertise to. I like to consider myself as a student of history and was learning new things as I read America the Beautiful. From the inception of the nation to recent history Dr. Ben Carson explores how we have both triumphed and failed, and how we can triumph once again. We are at a crucial turning point in history and just as our founding fathers were not content to suffer the status quo neither should we. I found this book an invigorating and inspiring read. No more will I vote along party lines. No more will I ignore the smaller elections. Thanks to Dr. Benjamin Carson and his book we can learn from the past and work together to ensure an even brighter future.
A renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Benjamin Carson who came from poverty was inspired by his mother’s work ethic, her love, and her commitment to seeing her sons make something wonderful of themselves accomplished his dreams and then some. Not one to be a victim of the system or situation Ben propelled himself through a school system that was stifled by an inability to inspire its students. At a young age his mother tasked him with reading, which he soon came to love. Dr. Ben Carson is living proof that if you have the determination to work hard, and dedicate yourself to your task, that you can overcome your situation. His life and his work is inspiring. His knowledge, not just of the human body or brain, is impressive. No matter where you are in life, or what your situation is, I believe that you will take something positive away from this book. America the Beautiful will educate you about the life of Ben Carson, the lives of the founding fathers, and the lives of many different groups of Americans today.
Dr. Benjamin Carson has many ideas on how to fix the biggest challenges we face today. These ideas are not simple musings but well thought logical solutions that have been derived from a mix of history, his education, and his experience. Some of his ideas might not seem appealing at first. But then we are normally too quick to judge or write something off – especially if it challenges what we are comfortable with. As you read through the logic and the rational behind the idea then it begins to make sense and you can understand why it’s implementation would bring about a positive effect. You might not agree with all of his arguments or points. But the overarching point which I think that we can all agree on, is that we need to come together, throw off the colors of our different parties, and work to compromise in order to proactively enact change. This book is in my opinion a great read for anyone of any background, socioeconomic standing, or level of education. We can all learn something from this unique and extremely intelligent individual.
