By: James Hayman
Thrillers have become quite a popular genre of fiction over the last few years, and with good reason. FUll of excitement and action, these books get your heart racing, your skin constricting, and your breath catches in your chest. Throw in a bit of mystery and a few key plot twists and you have one heck of a story – or, well, James Hayman has one heck of a story in his new book The Cutting. This work is not your average crime drama. The Cutting was my first experience reading anything from James Hayman so I was a little unsure of what to expect. What he delivered, has me anxiously awaiting his next book. Hayman is imaginative and delivers a complex plot through a great style of writing. His characters were richly developed and added to the progression of the story. My favorite part about it all was the plot twists, which caught you off guard just enough and took the story in a whole new direction; adding another delicious layer of complexity.
Caution: Once you pick up The Cutting, you won’t be putting it back down – so plan your reading wisely. James Hayman had me reading late into the night with this one. McCabe, the main character in The Cutting was refreshingly human. The man had a past that followed him, and just enough flaws to make him relatable. Hayman has created the perfect blend of characters that take a wild story and ground it, making it seem eerily all too possible. This thriller is at the top of the category in my opinion is definitely worth your time. A potential serial killer, a passionate detective dealing with more than just this case, a large pool of likely suspects and ticking clock all send this book to the head of its class. McCabe is a detective formerly of New York raising a child on his own in Maine. The case of his lifetime just happens to the sleepy town’s worst nightmare.
